چکیده

It is a standard practice for cloud service providers (CSPs) to overbook physical system resources to maximize the resource utilization and make their business model more profitable. Resource overbooking can, however, lead to performance interference between the virtual machines (VMs) hosted on the physical resources thereby causing performance unpredictability for applications hosted in the VMs. As applications with soft real-time requirements get increasingly hosted in cloud environments, performance jitter caused due to resource overbooking will be unacceptable to these applications. Addressing these conflicting requirements needs a careful design of the placement strategies for hosting soft real-time applications such that the performance interference effects are minimized while continuing to allow resource overbooking. These placement decisions cannot be made offline because run-time workload changes and satisfying the priorities of collocated VMs may require VM migrations, which requires an online solution. This paper presents a machine learningbased, online placement solution to this problem that learns from a publicly available trace of a large data center owned by Google. Our approach first classifies the VMs based on their historic mean CPU and memory usage, and performance features. Subsequently, it learns the best patterns of collocating the classified VMs by employing machine learning techniques. These extracted patterns are those providing the lowest performance interference level on the specified host machines making them amendable to hosting soft real-time applications while still allowing resource overbooking. Keywords-virtual machine placement, cloud computing, deployment algorithm, performance interference and QoS.

Communication-Aware Traffic Stream Optimization for Virtual Machine Placement in Cloud Datacenters with VL2 Topology

By pervasiveness of cloud computing, a colossal amount of applications from gigantic organizations increasingly tend to rely on cloud services. These demands caused a great number of applications in form of couple of virtual machines (VMs) requests to be executed on data centers’ servers. Some of applications are as big as not possible to be processed upon a single VM. Also, there exists severa...

A Near Optimal Approach in Choosing The Appropriate Physical Machines for Live Virtual Machines Migration in Cloud Computing

Migration of Virtual Machine (VM) is a critical challenge in cloud computing. The process to move VMs or applications from one Physical Machine (PM) to another is known as VM migration. In VM migration several issues should be considered. One of the major issues in VM migration problem is selecting an appropriate PM as a destination for a migrating VM. To face this issue, several approaches are...

RT-OpenStack: a Real-Time Cloud Management System

Clouds have become appealing platforms for running not only general-purpose applications but also real-time applications. However, current clouds cannot provide real-time performance for virtual machines (VM) for two reasons: (1) the lack of a real-time virtual machine monitor (VMM) scheduler on a single host, and (2) the lack of a real-time aware VM placement scheme by the cloud manager. While...
